Gender and Politics, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park

This course is designed as an overview to the field of gender and politics. It examines the role that gender plays in politics in the US and around the world. Students will begin by examining how women are socialized differently from men and how that socialization affects women’s political attitudes and participation. Then students will focus on women in different political offices and how their behavior compares to that of their male counterparts. Students will turn to different theories of representation of women and men in politics. Finally, students will analyze the women’s movements globally. We will trace women’s participation in formal politics from their decision to run for office to the representation they provide after they are elected. We will read about and discuss the difference between formal and informal political participation. We will consider policies for diversifying parliamentary systems and the reasoning behind them. We will discuss the obstacles that legislators belonging to underrepresented groups face in participating in parliamentary affairs. We will examine how legislators belonging to underrepresented groups have unique experiences and challenges because of gendered institutions.

Dictators and their Demise, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park

This course examines the politics of authoritarian rule: the conditions that give rise to authoritarianism; the variety of authoritarian regimes; the strategies authoritarian leaders use to retain power; the consequences of different forms of authoritarianism for economic growth and human development; globalization and autocracy; digital repression; and the domestic and international sources of authoritarian demise. The course covers current and historical cases of authoritarian rule in Syria, China, North Korea, and Russia. Educational materials include: a short story, documentary film, articles and books written by journalists, policy articles, theoretical studies of authoritarian rule, and empirical political science research.
